This important project at Severn Hospice will extend The Perry Ward, creating more space and comfort for patients and families. Planned works also include improvements to the patio area, ensuring a brighter and more welcoming environment.

Project Kick-Off

Back in April 2025, the CRASH team visited Severn Hospice alongside our Corporate Patrons, Bauder Flat Roofs and MiTek, as part of the CRASH application visit to assess the scope of works. MiTek later carried out a detailed survey and provided expert advice on the existing roof trusses – guidance that has been invaluable in moving the project forward.

Work Underway

Construction was well underway, with our CRASH Corporate Patrons playing a vital role in bringing the project to life. The first delivery of bricks for the extension from Huws Gray arrived on site in July, marking their first supported CRASH project. These bricks have been steadily rising and defining the shape of this much-needed space. Kingspan Insulation provided the Kooltherm insulation for the roof, creating a warm, efficient, and comfortable environment inside the building. British Gypsum supplied all the drywall need to form the new rooms within the expanded Perry Ward.

A huge thank you to Lisa Conway from Kingspan for visiting the site and capturing fantastic photos and video footage of the ongoing building works.

Next Steps

Marshalls is supporting with building materials including paving slabs or outside the building. These will help form, the garden area in front of the patient ward, where patients can go with their families to relax and get fresh air.

This project is a powerful example of collaboration. Together, we’re helping Severn Hospice provide care, compassion, and dignity when it’s needed most.

If you would like to get involved with this project or any others, by donating your time, professional expertise or construction materials – please contact our Projects Manager Vipesh Mistry at projectsmanager@crash.org.uk.

The need

The Lewis Manning Hospice provides support to adults living with life-limiting illnesses or those in need of end-of-life care. They work tirelessly with service users across East Dorset, Purbeck, Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and West Hampshire. Around 1200 people are now using their services each year. To meet growing demand for its services, the charity purchased an additional property to house its therapy, bereavement and family support services. To make the new space fit for purpose and fully accessible, the building required significant renovation and specialist design input.

The project

CRASH is proud to have supported Lewis-Manning Hospice Care in the creation of its new therapies centre, Sunflower House, in Poole.

Through the unique collaboration of CRASH Corporate Patrons and supporters, the project was transformed into a welcoming, safe and functional space where patients and families can access crucial care and support.

Overall, the total Gift in Kind value for the completed project was £50,812, comprising discounted and pro-bono materials, professional expertise and a grant from CRASH.

Corporate Patrons:

Arcadis joined the initial site visit, producing a detailed report and providing project advice. The Arcadis team also gave MEP and structural engineering expertise for the design of the space.

British Gypsum supplied high-quality materials to improve the internal environment, including acoustic boarding for soundproofing, suspended ceiling systems, and plastering materials.

Geberit provided a specialist sanitary-ware pack for the new accessible bathroom, ensuring comfort and dignity for all users.

Supporters:

Marshalls plc contributed guttering materials to enhance the building’s external drainage systems.

Altro Limited donated durable, hygienic vinyl flooring and wall cladding products throughout the therapy spaces.

“When someone is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, they shouldn’t feel that they’re immediately restricted by end-of-life care. Sunflower House is a place where people can access support, such as counselling, from day one. Every patient we work with should feel empowered to take control of their wellbeing, and live life to the fullest for as long as possible. We want our patients to know that Lewis-Manning is here for them not just at the very end, but at every step of the journey. Sunflower House is the embodiment of that promise and we are incredibly grateful to CRASH and all partners involved for their support in making our vision a reality.”

Clare Gallie

Chief Executive of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care

The outcome

Sunflower House, the newly opened therapies centre, provides a serene, purpose-built setting for complementary therapies, family support, and bereavement counselling. Its welcoming, thoughtfully designed environment enables staff and volunteers to deliver compassionate care to individuals and families affected by life-limiting illness across Dorset.

The centre features dedicated spaces for counselling and holistic therapies, helping visitors feel comfortable, supported, and understood during challenging times. A new virtual hospice hub extends this care online and by phone, allowing nurses and therapists to reach patients who cannot travel to the centre.

In addition, Sunflower House includes a spacious central hub and kitchen area for drop-in support, informal conversations with nurses, and group activities that foster confidence and combat isolation. Accessible reception areas and upgraded bathrooms, including facilities for those with mobility needs, ensure every visitor is welcomed and supported.

“We’re proud to support the CRASH Sunflower House project. CRASH plays an invaluable role in bringing the construction industry together to improve facilities for homelessness charities and hospices across the UK, and we’re pleased to help wherever we can.”

Trevor Knight

Head of Group Technical Operations at Marshalls Plc

“We’re delighted to have played a role in supporting Lewis-Manning Hospice Care to create a space that truly reflects the dignity and compassion at the heart of hospice care. This project is a testament to what can be achieved when the construction industry comes together to make a difference.”

Wigan and Leigh Hospice provides compassionate care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses across the local community. The hospice has a 14-bed in-patient unit, caring for around 250 people each year. An additional six beds could be used if further funding became available, increasing the hospice’s capacity to support more patients and families.

Alongside in-patient care, the hospice is a vital hub for clinical and corporate teams, hosting training, events, and community outreach programs. A dedicated team of professionals and volunteers provide specialist palliative care in patients’ homes, ensuring people receive the support they need in familiar surroundings.

The need

Wigan and Leigh Hospice had an extensive area of the flat roof on their building with water ingress caused because of the roof leaking. This was causing damage to the interior of the building and preventing the area under that section of the roof from being used to its full capacity.

Due to this need, Wigan and Leigh Hospice reached out to CRASH for support from our Corporate Patrons with their flat roof project. The flat roof had reached the end of its serviceable life and required urgent replacement to avoid any further damage to the hospice building.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, AECOM carried out a PPM Survey for Wigan and Leigh Hospice in 2023 to support with the hospices budget and funding planning for the future. This report indicated the urgency and costs associated with the replacement of the flat roof.

CRASH reached out to Corporate Patron Bauder who specializes in flat roofs. Bauder agreed to support the project by providing pro bono materials and professional expertise.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £25,164 for professional expertise and pro-bono products.

The outcome

  • The PPM survey conducted by AECOM in 2023 has enabled staff at Wigan and Leigh Hospice to proactively manage building maintenance, plan budgets effectively, and support grant and funding applications, ensuring the continuity of the hospice’s services.
  • The new flat roof provided by Bauder guarantees the warmth, safety and comfort of the hospice for future patients for many years to come.
  • The area of the building that was previously unusable to its full capacity can now be used as intended.

“The support we’ve received from CRASH on our roofing project has been invaluable. They worked with us right from the start to plan and then deliver the project, as well as providing discounted materials and financial support. The expertise provided by their Patrons is something we would have otherwise struggled to access. The comfort of our patients is absolutely paramount, so ensuring our building is warm and comfortable is incredibly important. During the work, the contractors have been so careful to ensure there is minimal disruption to our patients and services, and we are so grateful for that care and attention. This project will have a lasting legacy for the hospice and we appreciate everything CRASH has done to make this happen.”

Clare Cooke

Director of Business Development at Wigan & Leigh Hospice

“Bauder is delighted to have been part of the Wigan and Leigh Hospice project. It’s been a privilege to donate our flat roof materials and expertise to such a valuable cause. We’ve witnessed first-hand the amazing work undertaken by the WLH team of professionals and volunteers in supporting patients and their families. It shouldn’t be under-estimated, the positive impact that surroundings can have even in the most trying of times, and we’re confident the new roof will contribute to a warmer, more comfortable environment for both staff and patients.”

Joe Davenport

Area Technical Manager, Bauder Ltd

”The 2023 PPM survey by AECOM identified key areas for improvement at the hospice, allowing them to proactively plan for future building work. We were delighted to support this by replacing the flat roof, aiming for a leak-free building during the rainy months ahead! It was a pleasure to collaborate with Bauder once again; their team truly had the hospice’s care at heart.”

Bury Hospice provides compassionate care and support for individuals diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses across the six townships of Bury.

In addition to inpatient and outpatient services, the Hospice offers bereavement support, mindfulness sessions, and walk-and-talk grief support for families.

Bury Hospice also facilitates medical services like blood tests and chemotherapy in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust as part of outpatient services to bring treatment closer to home.

The need

Bury Hospice provides essential care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses, but limited parking has become a significant barrier for patients, families, and staff. Many patients, particularly those attending chemotherapy and blood testing clinics, struggle to find a space, adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult time.

The existing car park was often full, forcing visitors to park on nearby roads with restricted access. Staff, including the Outreach Team providing care in the community, also faced daily challenges in securing parking, which impacted their ability to deliver timely support.

CRASH was approached to help address this issue by creating 17 additional parking spaces using other available land on Bury Hospices grounds.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, Arcadis joined the initial visit and produced a detailed report outlining three key areas on the property where potential new car parking spaces could be and highlighting the various pros and cons of each option. This was also facilitated by Corporate Patron BAM UK & Ireland who captured Bury Hospice’s land from above, using drone footage to survey the area meaning Arcadis could use these images to mark out the areas with potential.

The CRASH Projects Team reached out to various patrons for support with materials and professional expertise to progress the project. Corporate Patron AECOM supported with the Project Management of the car park expansion since its start in 2021. Corporate Patron NG Bailey provided electrical materials including electrical vehicle charging points and lighting for the car park. Heidelberg Materials, also a Corporate Patron, supported with landscaping materials for the footpath areas. CRASH Supporter Marshalls provided concrete materials including kerbs, paving stones and foundations.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project to date is £196,475, which includes a grant from CRASH to support with the cost of the project.

A Personal Connection

“When I was first asked if getting involved in a project for CRASH at Bury Hospice was something I was interested in, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Being a Bury lad born and bred tells me that if you live in Bury, you will definitely know either a family member or friend who’s life has been touched by the fantastic work they do. Having been at NG Bailey for 27 years, I am always proud to be able to give something back to the community, but super proud that my role enables me to support such a personal project right on my own doorstep.”

John Rogerson

Work Winning Director – North West & Energy Infrastructure Sector Lead at NG Bailey

“Having been a beneficiary of the CRASH patronage support with a hospice car park myself whilst at Renne Grove Peace Hospice, I understand how vitally important it is to have well-designed and accessible parking facilities to ensure a supportive and stress-free environment for patients and their families in what are already challenging circumstances. Seeking funding for car parks is never easy, as whilst essential, they rarely attract grant funding. CRASH are delighted to have supported Bury Hospice, not only with professional expertise and materials but also a financial grant.”

The outcome

  • Patients can now arrive with ease, alleviating the number of people late to appointments due to parking challenges, also supporting the day to day running of the Hospice.
  • Families can better use their time to spend quality time with their loved ones rather than searching for spaces.
  • The Outreach Team can now park in their designated spaces making it easier to carry out their work without unnecessary delays and focus their efforts on patients.
  • The Reception Team no longer have to track down vehicle owners who have double-parked and blocked others from leaving, ensuring a smoother and more welcoming experience for everyone visiting the Hospice.

“Bury Hospice is deeply grateful to CRASH Charity for making our new car park a reality. CRASH provided the initial funding, guided the design process, and brought together the right partners to deliver the project. The CRASH team has supported us every step of the way and shown great understanding, even when persistent rain turned our site into a sea of mud. The Prince of Wales Hospice provides expert care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses and their families in the Five Towns area of Wakefield District. Specialising in palliative care, they focus on enhancing quality of life through symptom management, psychological support, and end-of-life care.

The Hospice is also a valuable community resource. Each year they care for over 2,000 local people, offering round-the-clock support and helping to raise awareness and confidence in palliative care for those with progressive conditions, including those from underserved communities.

The need

The Prince of Wales Hospice had realised a growing need for a calming, communal outdoor space within their grounds. Many of their patients had asked for more time outside which proved to be beneficial to their mental health and wellbeing.

Due to this need The Prince of Wales Hospice approached CRASH for help on phase two of their Garden Project which was focused on replicating the patio designs from phase one for their remaining bedrooms and transforming a communal space outside of the outpatient suite into a useable, wellbeing garden.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, Arcadis joined the initial visit and their project advisor produced a detailed report highlighting the hospices next steps for the garden project.

Additionally, Corporate Patron, Heidelberg Materials supported with this project, providing high quality landscaping materials for the wellbeing garden and patio areas, amounting to 20 tonnes of grit sand.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £1,156.23 for professional expertise and pro-bono products.

The outcome

  • The Wellbeing Team will be able to provide gardening and other practical activity sessions from right outside the ‘Haven’ outpatient suite.
  • The Wellbeing Garden provides a calming, sensory experience for patients and visitors alike.
  • The new outdoor space creates the possibility for meaningful social and healing activities for years to come.
  • Employees who care for patients at The Prince of Wales Hospice now have an environment where they can unwind on their lunch breaks.

“We are so proud to see this vision become a reality. The garden is now a space that truly reflects the values of the Hospice – offering comfort, accessibility, and peace to all who need it. Watching patients, families, and visitors enjoy this beautiful environment is incredibly rewarding and demonstrates the importance of providing outdoor spaces that nurture both body and mind. We are extremely grateful to CRASH and Heidelberg Materials, ttheir generosity has enabled the Hospice to create a space that will serve as a sanctuary for patients and families for many years to come.”

Ashgate Hospice provide specialist palliative and end of life care to the people of North Derbyshire. They help improve the quality of patients’ lives after receiving a terminal diagnosis, when every single day is precious. The hospice supports patients’ families, practically and emotionally, whilst they care for their loved ones and following bereavement, for as long as they need.

In 2023, CRASH helped ensure that the day services at Ashgate Hospice were made accessible for all patients, their loved ones and other visitors. Creating equal access to therapeutic services, training, café and the wellbeing courtyard. Read more about this project here.

As well as an in-patient unit, the hospice also provides day services including activities and peer support, occupational therapy, complementary therapy, spiritual care and counselling.

Watch the official opening:

The need

Various areas within the Ashgate Hospice Inpatient Unit had remained unchanged since the Hospice first opened 30 years ago. They were therefore dated, clinical and more like a hospital. There was a growing need amongst patients of a warm welcoming space to spend quality time with family and friends that was separate from their rooms.

Due to this need, Ashgate Hospice reached out to CRASH for help reimaging their day centre to create a homely, modern and dignified environment to match their outstanding quality of care. Additionally, there were critical works needed on the roof of the day hospice, repairing the roof and waterproofing.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, Arcadis joined the initial visit, and their project advisors produced a detailed report highlighting the hospice’s next steps for the reimaging of the day centre.

Corporate Patron Bauder played a crucial role in waterproofing the flat roof of the day centre, these works were essential and had to be carried out before any renovations to the inside of the day centre could begin.

Additionally, CRASH Corporate Patrons, Dulux Decorator Centre, British Gypsum, Geberit, Johnson Tiles, Knauf and Knauf Insulation also supported with this project, providing pro bono or discounted materials and professional expertise.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £135,054 for professional expertise and pro-bono products. This includes a grant from CRASH, that is only made possible thanks to generous donations and fundraising of the construction industry.

The outcome

  • The Inpatient Unit was transformed into a light, modern, and spacious space, providing a homelier atmosphere with features like piped oxygen, hoists, and outdoor access for each room.
  • Patients will experience increased privacy, with private spaces for conversations, and better comfort, including more room for personal belongings, family visits, and recliner chairs.
  • The new design allows patients more control over their time with family visits, being able to have more visitors at one time and having the appropriate environment to interact with them.
  • The transformation means that the Inpatient Unit is now fit for purpose for the future, improving the overall quality of care provided and ensuring the facility meets the needs of patients for years to come.
  • The flat roof of the day centre is now 100% waterproof and guaranteed for the future safety of the building.
  • This project directly addresses fundamental needs, enhancing the quality of life of patients and their families during a difficult and crucial time, ensuring every day is meaningful.

“We are incredibly grateful to CRASH Charity and their Patrons for making the refurbishment and reconfiguration of our Day Hospice, clinic and therapy rooms, toilet facilities, and reception areas possible. Their generosity has helped us create a more welcoming, accessible, and functional space for those who need our care. The redesigned spaces will enable us to fulfil a key strategic aim: reaching more people earlier in their life-limiting diagnosis. By partitioning areas, we can offer a wider range of wellbeing activities tailored to individual needs. The creation of a fully accessible toilet with changing facilities and a hoist system ensures equitable access for all, while the reconfiguration of the space allows us to run multiple activities and support services simultaneously. This will significantly increase our service capacity, opening up our holistic care to even more people across North Derbyshire. Now, when patients and their loved one’s step through our doors, they will be met with an environment that truly reflects the warmth, compassion, and holistic care that Ashgate Hospice provides. This transformation helps reinforce that hospice care isn’t just for those at the end of life—it is here to support people with life-limiting illnesses and their families at every stage of their journey. From myself, the Day Service Team, and everyone at Ashgate—thank you so much. Your support is making a lasting difference.”

St Mary’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care for people with life-shortening conditions, including cancer, heart, lung, and neurological diseases. Supporting approximately 26,500 people each year, the hospice offers services such as inpatient care, complementary therapy, day hospice, and bereavement support.

Covering both rural and urban areas, St Mary’s reaches communities facing significant health and economic inequalities, including some of the most deprived areas in Barrow-in-Furness. With a focus on holistic, person-centred care, their dedicated team supports individuals and families through every stage of their journey.

The need

In 2021, it became clear that the reception area was outdated and did not offer the same level of care and consideration as St Mary’s Hospice clinical services.

Consultations with staff, patients, and visitors highlighted key issues, including a lack of privacy, inefficient use of space, poor accessibility, and an unwelcoming atmosphere. One of the most pressing concerns was the absence of a private patient entrance, requiring patients to enter through a busy public area.

St Mary’s Hospice reached out to CRASH to help with their essential redesign to transform the reception area into a warm, welcoming, and accessible place of comfort and reassurance for all.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, Arcadis joined the initial visit and their project advisors produced a detailed report highlighting the hospice’s next steps.

Additionally, CRASH Corporate Patrons, Gardiner & Theobald, British Gypsum, Kingspan Group & Dulux Decorator Centre and Support Altro all supported with this project, providing pro bono or discounted materials and professional expertise.

Dulux Decorator Centre worked with St Mary’s Hospice to create a thoughtfully curated colour palette that reflected the warm, compassionate, and welcoming environment St Mary’s aimed to provide for its service users and their families.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £123,145, for professional expertise, pro bono products, discounted materials, including a grant provided by the generous support from the construction industry.

The outcome

  • With the support of CRASH Patrons, we have created a welcoming and accessible area that truly reflects the care and compassion of St Mary’s Hospice.
  • The new dedicated private patient entrance now provides a more dignified and calming arrival experience for patients.
  • Previously wasted areas have now been reconfigured to make better use of the space and include a new family room, an office for the Family Bereavement Support Team and a video conferencing room for the Clinical Team and quiet rooms for private conversations away from the main reception.
  • While at the Hospice, CRASH Patrons took the opportunity to improve staff facilities. As a result, a much-needed staff room and quiet space have been introduced, giving staff a place to rest and reflect.
  • The redesign has improved accessibility for people with dementia and includes visually impaired signage to ensure St Mary’s Hospice is welcoming to all.
  • The changes have already made a significant difference, creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for patients, families, and staff.

“The project has also had unexpected outcomes with a deeper relationship developing between Bob Sutcliffe of the Creative Health Trust resulting in not only creative support for the project but a grant towards creative therapy. There are also plans for Bob to deliver painting workshops as part of our staff wellbeing programme and to those engaged with our dementia services.”

These improvements ensure St Mary’s Hospice remains a warm, accessible, and functional space, supporting the highest level of care for all who walk through our doors.

“It has been a long journey, and we wouldn’t have got to such a successful outcome if it hadn’t been for the early and ongoing support of CRASH and their patrons. Seeing the positive difference our calm and welcoming refurbished building makes to patients, visitors and staff daily is truly heartwarming. It is fantastic to have a building that now reflects and supports the high level of care we provide to local families and affords everyone the privacy and dignity we wish for all.”

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice supports children with life-shortening conditions, their families, and families who are living with the loss of their child across West Yorkshire.

Their ‘outstanding’ rated services by the Care Quality Commission include nursing care, hydrotherapy, creative therapy, days out, memory making, end of life care, bereavement support and counselling.

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice helps families make the most of every moment they have together. Whether that’s providing support at their purpose-built hospice or helping families through their Hospice at Home service, and in hospitals across West Yorkshire.

The need

There is a growing demand from West Yorkshire NHS commissioners for care placements for children and young people with significant and complex needs, helping to both avoid hospital admission and support earlier discharge.

Due to this growing need, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice applied for CRASH’s help to increase capacity of their hospice. This involved creating a new fifth children’s en-suite bedroom and upgrading an existing family en-suite room for multi-use.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, Arcadis joined the initial visit and produced a detailed report highlighting the hospices next best steps to increasing their space, enabling them to help more children and their families. A Cost Manager from Corporate Patron Gardiner & Theobald also donated their time and expertise to cost this project.

The fifth children’s bedroom was created in line with the latest accessibility requirements by converting the former storeroom, conveniently next to the existing four bedrooms.

One of the two family rooms has now been upgraded to a multi-use functionality, meaning it can be used by both families and teenagers/older children with significant but less complex needs.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £47,640. This includes a grant from CRASH, that is only made possible thanks to generous donations and fundraising of the construction industry.

The outcome

  • The hospice now has five en-suite children’s bedrooms compared to four, meaning more children and their families can be helped when they need it most.
  • The multi-use room can be used by families and teenagers/older children, helping the hospice to increase their capacity and meet the demand at that time.
  • The child’s bedroom is complete with the latest accessibility requirements and enhances the ‘outstanding’ care the hospice staff can deliver.
  • By serving more children and their families the hospice is helping to avoid hospital admission and support earlier discharge.
  • The new space generates additional revenue for the hospice from NHS commissioned continuing care placements. This income will help to underpin and support the hospices core charitable services.

“Arcadis has a long history of supporting CRASH and I feel extremely honoured and privileged to play a part in that support. It was clear from the second we stepped through the door that the staff at the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice truly care about helping families make the most of every moment that have together, and it feels very special to be able to use my professional skills to help CRASH support the charity on this project.”

“We are delighted with the addition of a new bedroom – the first one since Russell House was built over 10 years ago. This expansion allows us to extend our respite and clinical care services to children, both those on our charitable caseload and those with highly complex needs through funded placements. Providing a home away from home for children in need of respite care is incredibly important to families who often find themselves exhausted by providing round-the-clock care to their child. With this additional space, our dedicated care team, recognised with an ‘outstanding’ rating by the Care Quality Commission, can offer support to even more families. We’re incredibly grateful to CRASH for their support in this project and to all the fundraisers whose contributions have made grants like this possible.”

Homelessness charity offers ‘meaningful privacy’ and independence for residents https://www.crash.org.uk/our-work/homelessness-charity-offers-meaningful-privacy-and-independence-for-residents/ Fri, 23 Feb 2024 13:44:42 +0000 https://www.crash.org.uk/?post_type=projects&p=12822 The post Homelessness charity offers ‘meaningful privacy’ and independence for residents appeared first on crash.

Winchester Beacon is open 365 days a year and provides accommodation, food, and vital support services to help break the cycle of homelessness and enable residents to rebuild their lives.

The charity accommodates 60-80 people annually and provides ongoing support to many more, offering guidance during a person’s stay, helping them to plan for an independent future and find a more permanent home.

The need

It was recommended by Homeless Link, following advice from healthcare professionals after the pandemic, that night shelters with shared sleeping spaces and bathroom areas should ideally not continue.

Winchester Beacon also recognised residents were staying for longer periods of time as opposed to one or two nights. As a result, they felt that their facilities should be upgraded to accommodate a lengthier stay.

The charity applied for CRASH’s help to adjust their communal facilities, so that every resident could have a single bedroom and their own bathroom facilities. This included a new accessible bathroom for any residents with specific accessibility needs.

The charity sought the views of residents, and it was concluded that the benefits of a single room with its own bathroom facilities would be ‘huge’ and ‘meaningful’, as well as an appropriate way to move forward with homelessness accommodation.

The project

The charity had a total of 10 bedrooms, four of these were existing single bedrooms, whereas the remaining six were shared spaces.

The project involved reconfiguring the shared spaces into single bedrooms and CRASH supporter Black Architecture proposed various design options for the charity to consider.

Corporate Patron Arcadis attended the initial visit and provided a subsequent report, as well as donating the expertise of a Quantity Surveyor to cost the proposed designs.

After careful consideration from the charity, engaging residents and stakeholders, a design was chosen, and Corporate Patron AECOM donated their Project Management expertise to oversee the project.

Corporate Patrons Cundall gave engineering support whilst NG Bailey offered M&E advice.

The former communal bathroom facilities were transformed into single shower rooms, complete with a shower, wash basin and toilet, Corporate Patron Geberit assisted with specification needs and donated products at both free and discounted rates. Drainage was assessed by a Civil Engineer and costed by a Quantity Surveyor from AECOM.

Corporate Patrons British Gypsum donated free of charge plasterboard and moisture resistant boards whilst Dulux Decorator Centre donated the required paint at no cost to the charity. Supporter Altro flooring gave discounted flooring.

The outcome

  • Each resident now has their own room. The charity acknowledged their feedback, and now residents feel listened to and cared for, whilst also encouraging independence.
  • The individual shower rooms replace outdated communal washing facilities and give residents the privacy and dignity they need during a vulnerable time in their lives.
  • The individual shower rooms include one with disabled access, ensuring the hostel is a comfortable stay for guests regardless of a disability.
  • The total professional expertise and discounted materials £53,138.57
  • CRASH donated grants totalling £40k made possible thanks to dedicated fundraisers from across the construction industry
  • Total value support £93,138.57

No project is complete without an official opening…

CRASH’s Francesca Roberts and Vipesh Mistry alongside other supporters, funders and Trustees gathered at Winchester Beacon to celebrate the achievement and declare the new spaces officially open. Dean Catherine Ogle, Patron of Winchester Beacon, cut the toilet roll ribbon and gave a ceremonial flush! The opening also unveiled an official plaque that recognises CRASH’s contribution to this project.

“We are so pleased to finally be able to offer our residents their own space to wash. We know that the communal washing facilities were off-putting for many current and potential residents. Having a private place to wash and shower will have such a positive impact on the wellbeing of our residents. We would like to thank everyone involved in making this project possible, it has been such a team effort.”

Michèle Price

Chief Executive at Winchester Beacon

“At AECOM our mission is to deliver a better world by delivering a positive, lasting legacy in the communities in which we work. The Winchester Beacon project is a fantastic example of exactly that. Personally, it was great to be able to support a local charity who are doing such important work in our community to help bring an end to homelessness. By providing our teams’ project management skills we were able to guide the charity through what is a challenging construction process. Allowing them to maintain focus on their important work and resulting in the delivery of fantastic facilities which improve the homes’ ability to offer privacy and dignity to residents.”

Tom Parsons

Associate at AECOM

“Handing over this project at Winchester Beacon is a significant milestone in the CRASH project portfolio, having worked on this project for almost four years, including through the pandemic. This transformation epitomises the good will of the construction industry; with a significant number of our Corporate Patrons involved. With extensive collaboration between Corporate Patrons, the benefitting charity and our team at CRASH, it was a true team effort – thank you to all involved, you have made a huge difference to the residents at Winchester Beacon.”

Herriot Hospice Homecare provide hospice at home services including clinical and complimentary therapies, counselling and bereavement support for adults and children in the Hambleton and Richmondshire districts of North Yorkshire.

The Hospice was gifted a former NHS Hospital building, The Lambert, following its decommission in 2015. Herriot Hospice applied to CRASH for help transforming the former cottage hospital in Thrisk into Herriot Hospice at the Lambert, a modern hospice building that will offer in-patient care to the rural communities of Hambleton and Richmondshire.

The need

The two North Yorkshire districts cover 1,000 square miles between them. With no specialist palliative or hospice care services in the area, people in need of this support must make an un-comfortable long journey to receive the care they need and deserve. Loved ones visiting would also have to travel the long distance so they can spend precious moments together.

Herriot Hospice at The Lambert will make in-patient hospice care accessible in the area for the first time, helping to meet the needs of the local community. The Lambert will also house bereavement support rooms, a café and community hub facility – providing a warm and welcoming place for people to visit and stay.

The Project

CRASH visited The Lambert alongside Corporate Patron Arcadis in 2020 and issued a report outlining the hospices next best steps for refurbishment and conversion of their impressive building, the oldest parts of which were constructed in the late 1800’s. As the design developed CRASH Corporate Patrons were able to assist in the following ways:

  • The initial report prepared by Arcadis was provided free of charge and highlighted several recommendations, including an option to avoid significant demolition and rebuild works and consider internal reconfiguration of the existing building. This approach was adopted by the Hospice, saving a considerable amount of money.
  • JNP Group assessed the feasibility of installing a hoist track to the ceilings so patients can be moved safely and comfortably – their report was issued at a discounted rate.
  • A Quantity Surveyor from Arcadis donated their expertise free of charge to provide costings for the plasterboard and thermal flat roof as proposed in the initial report.
  • Kingspan agreed to donate the required thermal flat roof insulation free of charge.
  • To finalise the project, Dulux Decorator Centre donated the hospices carefully chosen paint colours free of charge while CRASH supporter, Johnson Tiles donated discounted wall tiles.

The outcome

  • High quality and patient-focused care will be available closer to home for local people, providing choice and control at a time when it can feel like this has been taken away.
  • The Lambert will offer a hub for specialist palliative care, education and bereavement support in a place that is accessible and sustainable for the long term.
  • The new hospice has the capacity to offer training, helping to upskill local healthcare professionals, and ensuring people can receive outstanding care across the community.

The Impact

  • The Gift in Kind value from donated expertise and products on the project totalled £12,855.
  • CRASH pledged a grant of £30,000 for this project, made possible thanks to the brilliant and generous fundraising of the UK construction sector.
  • Total value of support from CRASH, Corporate Patrons and supporters for this project was £42,855.

“We are extremely pleased to have been able to support Herriot Hospice Homecare from the outset of the project with initial design and procurement advice and cost consultancy services. Our role as Projects Advisor to CRASH provides us with a unique opportunity to visit projects at an early stage to provide professional expertise to the charities CRASH supports and help determine how its patrons might assist. It is fantastic to see the successful completion of Herriot Hospice@The Lambert.”

“The project to transform the former Lambert Memorial Hospital into a new local in-patient hospice and wellbeing hub is a significant undertaking, and one CRASH is proud to support. CRASH relies entirely on the generosity of the construction industry who offer their professional expertise, products and fundraising to construct places that care for people. We are confident that their donations at Herriot will leave a lasting impact, as the hospice continues to create a high-quality, patient-focused environment where people feel comfortable and cared for.”
